Further update on using the AF-S 500mm F4 telephoto lens:
I've been shooting quite a lot with the lens on the D750 where it produces great sharp images even fully open, coupled with Nikor TC14 II teleconverter (700mm on FF), there is a noticeable drop in quality, better results come from using the D7100 APS-c crop sensor where you get an equivalent FL of 750mm, without the loss of I stop of light.
Sharpness remains very good at all apertures!
