I had read a few reviews about Canon 70-300mm IS before I bought it. The views stated that Canon is very good lens to beat Nikon 70-300mm VR at 300mm F8, but besides it lags behind the Nikon. I also have experience using Nikon before, and as my feeling, Nikon is slightly better from 70-200mm and at 300mm Nikon performs similar to my Canon at every aperture. In the views, Canon is better at 300mm F8, but my lens does not perform so even stopping down to F8 image quality is still the same as Nikon's. I believe my lens is bad copy.
I found a lot of Tamron owners in Nikon mount finding out that it is very good lens to perform far better than Nikon's at 300mm wide open, so I think this lens is better than Canon at every focal lens length and aperture. From what I read from reviews and my own experience, Canon 70-300mm IS lags behind Nikon 70-300mm VR both image and built quality (not at 300mm F8) and Tamron is the best among them. However the new 70-300mm L IS will reverse it.
