@joachim: take a look at the products of Boinx Software. They have a low cost solution (Photo Presenter) as well as FotoMagico, which is widely regarded as the benchmark when it comes to slideshow software on the Mac.

Regarding output, though, I'm afraid you're bound to large movie files if you want to get highest quality. Unless you use the Pro version of FotoMagico, which can produce player files (which run on the Mac only, however, at least to my knowledge).
