The spec's and the price of this WA zoom make it quite interesting on paper!! Has any of you had any experience with it or seen a test? Second, what is the normal quality level of Tokina at this "pro" level? I am considering it for a D700 and the competition is the Nikon 16-35 f4 or the 12-24f2.8. What say you Klaus or Michael or anyone else for that matterSmileThanks in advance! Vieux Loup

Tokina calls just about any lens "pro", so that domination does not stand for much.

The 12-24mm f4 DX APS-C lens was the UWA wide angle from Tokina that made them have a good name, but that lens is a lens with a serious design/component fault concerning the aperture mechanism.

The 11-16mm f2.8 DX APS-C lens from Tokina bettered it optically, making it one of the best APS-C UWA's available.

I suspect you meant the 14-24mm f2.8 from Nikon? <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

The 16-28mm f2.8 FF lens appears to be another hit for Tokina (bringing their interesting lens line up to 5 in my book: 11-16mm f2.8 DX, 10-17mm DX fisheye, 35mm f2.8 DX macro, 100mm f2.8 macro and now 16-28mm f2.8).

In short, it appears to be as good as the Nikon 14-24mm f2.8, minus that lens's cons: Not the barrel distortion of the Nikon, not the exposed front element of the Nikon, not the weight of the Nikon and not the price of the Nikon. Plus for the Nikon is the wider view angle (14mm vs 16mm).

Go for it, I would say. (Well, don't trust that brightcolours... he was the one suggesting that Tamron 70-300 VC USD after all <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Wink' /> ).

p.s: Check out that awesome bokeh quality in the photos of the last link... wow, for a wide angle. Now that is creamy.
