You won't go wrong either way, I know plenty of photographers that sear by Canon 70-200f2.8 IS, for them it's the ultimate lens. OTOH its f4 sister is rather compact as sharp as a lens could be, I don't there's a sharper zoom around, Klaus reviews confirm this finding.
Only problem with 70-200f2.8 IS is most the ones you will find on the used market have been abused by professionals who used them for thousands and thousands of times...
