Got a D7000 for a friend recently, shot a few hundred frames for testing - really nice small camera, definitely worthy D90 replacement. After some consideration, the walk around lens of the choice became Sigma 17-70 2.8-4 OS. Reason - faster by 1 stop, smoother bokeh, "almost macro" and costs 300 eur <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> Plus a 50mm 1.8 to accompany it.
Tried that underexposing thing by the way, shot at -6 stops (jpg looked black) and iso 100, then recovered from raw. Tonal range of recovered image was visibly poorer (somewhat similar to point and shoot cameras), but definitely usable.
