Well, who would purchase a 50/1.8 if it's the same price as the 50/1.4?
On the other hand: obviously quite a few people buy the SB-700 despite the fact that it's only marginally cheaper than the much more capable SB-900 ...
If you compare prices for the AF-D versions (or Canon's EF versions), the f/1.8 lenses are usually a lot cheaper than the faster lenses.

Honestly, so far I'm not impressed by the 55-300 VR, especially at the long end. But I might have had a bad sample. Got a second one just yesterday to verify this ...
