I shoot mostly with a 5D II and had a 5D before that (and a 40D).
With the 5D the 40D never got any use anymore, despite it being a more advanced camera. Quality of image files just was better IMO, which is more important to me than, e.g., 6 fps. Also, you have more options to play with DoF on FF, which I like a lot. And it is a very good low light camera as well, and I happen to do a lot of low light shooting.
When I finally got the 5D II, and the 5D did not get any use anymore, for the same reason as the 40D <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />.
The 5D is indeed a very capable camera, even nowadays. However did you consider buying a used 5D II? I don't know if your budget reaches that far, but I wouldn't be amazed if you ended up with one eventually, and maybe rather than spend money twice, save a little longer and get the camera you will likely end up with anyway.
HTH, kind regards, Wim
