Hi Warwick,
D7000 is the only DSLR I've used, so I can't compare them.
It's taking me a while to get to know well (I've not been using it as much as I think most would: too much work and DiY..!) but I like it a lot, and am much more used to, and comfortable with, the weight than when I first got it.
Excellent image quality, you can customise the controls extensively so it works how you want it to, it's very good in low light, has a good, bright viewfinder, autofocus works with 'D' series lenses (not sure the others do).
The 3100 (especially) and 5100 would be very different. What 'real world' aspects / features are you most interested in?
