I am not certain how big that market between low end DSLRs and high end compact cameras is.
Nikon is betting on their reputation. They think people will buy based on their name alone.
Personally, if I am looking for something around that size, I'll spring for something from Sony, Panasonic or Olympus. Folks hoping to move up from compact cameras want to see a quantum improvement in image noise and dynamic range.
