At the end of the day Sony can always choose to keep a bigger distance. That's merely a design question.
The current problem is that they've got only cheap lenses for a sensor which require lenses capable of delivering the double performance of a full format camera of similar megapixels. This is simply over the top. Plus the sensor characteristic.
