Question on Cleaning a CPL filter
#12

Thank you, Photonius. Yes, my CPL is a digital pro1. It seems the problem is in the coating. Today I tried to clean it with a clean cloth and breath again. It is better now, though the smear cannot completely get away. It looks weird, even with breath the glass surface looks like being covered by some kind of oil. I will check if it affects the images. If not then I will not be bothered with it any more.

Regards,

Frank

You are quite right, sometimes I get this very same feeling as well, it is as if it's the coating that has the grease. I know that machine parts (like the rims) can be covered in a thin layer of machine oil from manufacturing. Perhaps this has diffused over the whole filter, if the coating is hydrophobic. Sounds strange, but who knows. For now I tend to believe that a more likely scenario is that even a little bit of grease, once on the cleaning cloth/pad, will make another streak if it touches the filter again. I have similar problems with some technical stuff, just keep cleaning it endlessly, but hidden under the edge of the rim is some remnant of oil, and as long as that is there, and you keep cleaning it, you always get new streaks.

I was contemplating doing the thing I did with the PL filter. Take the digital pro1 uv filter, use the green dishwasher hand detergent, and soak the whole filter and clean it totally to see if that makes a difference.

I am also contemplating a test series. I have Hoya digital Pro1, B+W MRC, and Hoya HD. I want to come up with some why to compare how easy to clean each one is.

But still not great ideas...
