As Brightcolours said, lens hoods are great tumble protectors. It's also great to have a plastic LCD magnifier affixed to the back of an LCD-equipped camera. Then you've got fall protection for impacts in a couple of different directions. To that end a tripod quick-release mount, screwed permanently on the bottom of the camera, is a bit of a buffer as well. Buffer for falls in direction #3.
