IIRC only the communication protocols are reverse-engineered, certainly not the optical formula.

I have no idea but compatibility issues with 3rd party lenses are extremely rare in the past ~5 years. Sigma is a good example. In the past it had so many that it was actually nicknamed SIGnificant MAlfunction but in the last 5 or so years all was well. Tamron? Such problems were extremely rare throughout their history. And besides, [url="http://www.nikonians.org/html/resources/nikon_articles/other/compatibility.html"]Nikon's own history in that regard is not exactly flawless[/url].
