Rover, what brand/quality were those extension tubes?
On wider angle insect shooting:
35mm (on APS-C) 1:2 macro:

Or at ~320mm (also on APS-C), just to illustrate that there is no "right" focal length, the focal lengt's FOV determines the look of the photo:
