I'm slightly wondering whether the comparatively moderate border quality is a side effect of the sensor. e.g. The NEX5 has its fair share of problems with compact ultra-wides as well (corner smearing, color shifts) despites otherwise top-performing lenses (I'm referring to the Zeiss ZMs). The upcoming NEX7 sensor seems to have solved some of these issues. The Zeiss 24/1.8 is also fairly long which also indicates that they wanted to avoid the corner issues in the first place here.



This could also be an explanation for the fact that neither the 12/2, 14/2.5 nor 17/2.8 are especially (super-)sharp in the outer regions - all are very compact. The zoom lenses are much bigger. The retractable zoom design of some Olys (9-18, 14-42) does also avoid short lens-to-sensor distances.

Hm looking at image 5/10 I see that the lens resolves every blade of grass right into the corners. What pollutes the sharpness impression a bit is some CA which I consider easily correctable in post. Maybe the lens could be sharper, but the performance I see, seems already capable of producing very large prints only limited by the camera's resolution. Once the camera makers get noise performacne up to the very best Aps-c cameras, I will be sold on 4/3.

Technically the border quality is still good to very good - no doubts. Interestingly the measured CAs are fairly moderate (0.6px).

There was also some fringing (loca) on a few of the pictures (upper third of scene shots). Hum. Is there an easy way to check if the issue in the corners is the lens or sensors? Not really sure about your setup but perhaps something that does not use the sensor but rather measure the image off the lens ?

I noticed this, too, specifically in some clouds. Possibly a sensor effect due to the contrasts.

Lateral CAs are measured at black-light gray transitions (just like the MTFs). The situation is different once you run into clipping - from here on it's more related to purple fringing.

While the 12/2 shows some bokeh fringing it isn't really relevant in these landscape shots.
