I suggest you read this thread: http://forum.photozone.de/index.php?/topic/1289-sony-slt-high-fps-mode/

[/quote]

Why? Because it documents the weird limitations of the high FPS modes from the A33/55/77?

High PFS shooting only makes sense when capturing action, and without AF that is useless. With AF you have no control. So, why did you suggest I read that?

Well not that silly, IMHO. If the A77 output can get a bit better via good RAW processing, so can the other outputs of the other cameras... So while I certainly don´t take this little comparison as a definitive verdict of A77´s noise performance, it certainly has its meaning.

Only if the manufacturers have an equally bad JPEG. And that is not the case... Sony is known to at times really mess JPEG output up (A700 was a good example and the A77 seems to be another example). So, I could not care less about its JPEG hi ISO output, I would be much more interested to see what its RAW output offers. The A55/D7000/D5100 chip does well at high ISO, as well as the Canon 7D/600D/60D sensor (and much better at low ISO), so I have no reason to assume the new 24mp chip will be worse. RAW will tell.

Wrong.

1) High FPS shooting may replace AF - as I described several months ago. And in case you are unable to keep your moving object/subject continuously under an AF sensor, AF makes no sense.

2) High FPS shooting may help capture facial expression.

3) High PFS shooting, as implemented by Sony, guarantees not to abuse your lens it you stay away from continuous AF mode.

4) etc.

Of course high fps without AF can be very useful in many situation when the subject isn't moving towards or away from camera. Example: A baseball player hitting the ball.

That is quite a severe limitation on high fps. <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

But I guess for specific types of shooting it does not matter. The same can be said about compact cameras with small sensors, cameras with only one AF cross sensor, cameras with slow fps etc etc etc. <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

If the object moves towards the camera or from it, one of the frames taken at high FPS with locked focus will be acceptably sharp. Compute your apperture to provide for enough DOF, and you are there.

Or alternatively use the wide-open aperture and let the camera do its AF magic. It's not like there's any other camera that can do it.

The A77 can do 12fps + C-AF + AE (wide-open), or 12fps + AF prior to first shot + AE (any aperture). The $5000 Nikon D3s is the only camera that is in the area of the second part of this capability, but even it can't focus during the sequence.

A77 can AF and AE in 12 fps mode with the aperture wide open or F3.5.

No other camera can do it.

With fixed AF (AF set at first shot), you can choose the aperture, shutter speed, and ISO. It doesn't have to be wide open apeture. You still have the 12 fps.

In 8 fps mode, you get full control on everything (ISO, aperture, shutter speed) PLUS AF-C.

So what exactly is the point? This is superior compared to any other camera, at any price range.

Thanks for the info. So, in a TRUE apple-to-apple comparison against D300s (7 fps) or 7D (8 fps), it is capable of achieving 8 fps (with real time AF-C) at a lower price point. Is that correct?

With slower AF-ing lenses, yes.
