I´ve inspected the files and unfortunately I have to repeat myself: Not downright bad but on the whole I´m simply not impressed. Too polished ("watercolored") JPEGs and too noisy RAWs for my taste. BTW, check out these Reichmann´s latest comparison (to A900): http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviews/cameras/sony_a65_first_impressions.shtml To conclude, if I were to buy Sony, I would regret they put this overmegapixeled 24mpx APS-C sensor in their top DSLRs. I wish they had used the revised 16mpx sensor of 5n....

yes these were just crappy photos with camera shake and what not and FW 0.03, but these are first ever Nex-7 shot seen.

I am pretty confident (when looked at equal size) Nex-7 will be pretty close to 5n for noise, just like A77 is very close to A55. Dxo will confirm it.

Yep, lets wait and make conclusions on the final product. I´ve just commented on the first samples available, nothing else....

I wouldn't surprise if A77 would come close to A55 noise results... OTOH, the sensor on the 5n is the revised / enhanced version of the sensor in A55... I doubt that Nex-7 can reach 5n's performance on higher ISOs (1600 - 3200 range)... I agree with Martin... The sensor of 5n on the Nex-7 body would be a killer...

it's always been beyond me why companies release products this way - this company's been building camera gear and especially sensors for yonks, surely the experienced engineers who designed and built this wonderful new thing know what the pictures from it will look like - no?

and yet they hire a professional crew to go shoot a swish video of their big new thing but apparently don't, for just a few extra $$$, petty cash, hire a really good stills photographer to tag along to shoot some pretty pictures that they could then post full size hi-rez along with the vid to show how wonderful all these new pixels are and put us all out of our misery -

or, they can build sensors but don't know how to design raw converters maybe - all this controversy might fill in the days between building just one and then many to fill the shops everywhere, but i'm not sure that it is good press - and yet every time, this . . . and not only from this company - but they do seem to be good at it . . .

I don´t know what is it with the manufacturers (esp. Sony & Canon) - why do they think the target group for A77/NEX7 would prefer more pixels at the expense of higher ISO performance (and partly resulting per-pixel sharpness)...?? Maybe there are really more photographers in the target group who prefer this but I certainly don´t have this feeling at all based on various forums and various random feedbacks. Maybe Sony´s marketing polls and research talk contrary to my opinion, I don´t know of course.... In fact I´m not against pixel increase (to get me right), however, I believe it should go hand in hand with the sensor technology advancement. For instance, I would not protest if Nikon would come up with the successor of D3s which would have lets say 26mpx yet equal or even slightly better noise+DR+per-pixel-sharpness performance than the original D3s 12mpx sensor. I still think if Sony had been able to concentrate all their progress&development in sensor technology into 16-18mpx sensor with clearly unrivalled output, it would have been bigger success than the 24mpx APS-C which is for sure kind of marvel too, but the output clearly shows its limits as well as Sony´s high software effort to mask it... So are my ideas & requirements on sensors really so weird today...?

As long as no proper raw converter results are seen and unless a stable firmware version is installed in that camera, I don't think one should make sure statements about the IQ... BUT..., 24mp vs. 16mp on the same sensor area is a difference which has an impact on noise levels on higher ISOs (according to laws of physics). So, I believe the same raw conversion technology -or in general- same sensor electronics + same software will produce different results based on pixel density facts... And of course I'm talking about 100% LCD views, which in real photographic cases should not be exaggerated in terms of IQ...<img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Wink' /> At least Sony gave us something to chatter...<img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Big Grin' />

My guess would be, such companies tend to utilize the public opinion. I think in terms of marketing and technolgy, knowing the feedbacks of a large number of digital photography enthusiasts is a valuable information before you officially place a product in the market.

I don't know how much of our "valuable" opinions in these forums are cared for <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Big Grin' />...

Well, if you scale down to 16mp you will have the same quality as in the native sensor. However, you've gained the potential of a little more resolution which is not available to the 16mp sensor.

Anyway, the mega-pixel race continues to be non-sense from my perspective. Frankly I would opt for a state-of-the-art 10mp APS-C sensor.
