Forums > Back > Lenses with Nicknames
#31
Petteri Sulonen of the (now defunct) site Prime-Junta.net has devised nicknames for every lens he was reviewing. Here's a few off the top of my head:

"Popeye" - Sigma 12-24

"Twinkles" - Sigma 14/2.8

"El Hombre" - Sigma 20/1.8

"Plastic Piston" - EF 90-300

"Crystal Vodka" - EF 135 SF

"Ugly Ducklings" - all the first generation EF primes (the abovementined 135 SF, 24/2.8, 35/2 etc.)

"Tokina AT-X Pro 17 mm f/3.5" - Tokina AT-X Pro 17 mm f/3.5. Uh, nevermind.

Here's a few of my own (heard somewhere or self-made):

Sigma 15-30 - "Lenin's Lightbulb"

KM 28-75 - "Tamrolta"

EF 17-35L - "Oldboy"

EF 70-200/2.8 L IS - "Tank" or "Tank Gun"

Yes, I heard that one. It was before the era of the 85/1.4. Now I wonder how it will be called.

I've heard someone call it Kegma.

"Google" produces a LOT of made up ones... hard to find real ones.

Arent all nicknames made up? Or are there any "officially " approved ones (if so, who approves nicknames?) It comes more down to the question who has the competence to create a nickname. A single lens tester, a crowd of users or the single creative mind that invents the funniest name? USeless dicussion. I argue that the only legitimate nickname is the one which best captures the pecularities of a lens and is understood by a large number of people without second thought.

bTW I call my 24-105 L the miscontruct, as canon has exchanged minetwice and the third sample is still decentered.
