I have the possibility to buy a 135 mm Leica Elmarit with a Nikon ring. The original ring has been removed and a Nikon ring mounted so that the lens works in mode M and A. Does anyone have an opinion on the IQ that this lens could give on a D700?

I assume you mean that the Leica-R bayonet has been replaced with a Nikon bayonet.

IQ-wise it is supposed to be a good lens, and should be able to handle a D700 with ease. I'd suggest you give it a try - I honestly don't know whether it is better than a Nikon equivalent to be very honest.

Kind regards, Wim

If it is a R-mount, I wouldn't miss that chance... It's a Leica glass, how bad could it be <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Wink' />... Besides, in principle, you won't have infinity focus problems...

Yes, you are right again. <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Rolleyes' /> My vocabulary shows my technical ignorance. I doubt whether a vendor will let me try it out, but who knows. If it had been an outstanding lens, I might have given it a try.

The 135mm f2.8 from Leica is a very good lens, with particularly smooth bokeh. I would go for it, even though you will have to get used to setting aperture after focussing and possibly no metering help from the camera (not sure about this). And the lens looks great too.

Is it a lot better than the Nikon AF-D 135mm f2 DC? I am just curious since the Nikon 135mm f2 DC has a very good fame.

I haven't owned one, yet, but I doubt it. It's a Leica lens, yes, but it's still just a lens <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Wink' /> IOW: not everything carrying that name is far ahead of the competition.

Better in what respect? Resolution, most probably not. Not the sharpest Leica design on the block. Does not open as wide either. Colour? Probably yes. This Leica lens produces great colours. Bokeh character? Probably yes. Even though the Nikon is the DC lens, this Leica has the most lovely background Bokeh. Probably only the Sony will beat it there. AF? No, the Nikon can AF and the Leica can not. Build quality? The Leica wins. Metering? The Nikon wins hands down. Price? The Leice is more affordable.

The Leica is for sale second hand for 350€, the Nikon new is 1180€! I have not seen a Nikon for sale second hand for a while!

I just bought it. It is Xmas after all and it works perfectly in A and M mode in terms of the aperture, i.e. the arrows and the focus circle light up like any other lens. I quite look forward to trying it because of the small size and think it could be an interesting "street" lense on the D700. Anyways, it should be great for portraits!
