Rumor says a 24MP D3200 will be released by Niokon in April:

Does it mean a 54MP FX DSLR will be produced by Nikon in a not very far future?

Unfortunately this is going to cause a lot of headache for sites such as PZ. They are in a no-win position. Even if every single lens is re-tested for 24MP for DX, just around the corner there's going to possibly be 54MP.



Not to mention the D800/D800E as well as all the Canon, Sony...



Maybe the workload can be spread out to members. For example, we get provided with the test charts and methodology and we contribute to the data base.



I can say that if/when I get the D800, I would be willing to participate.

24MP DX is not really surprising given Nikon and Sony have a working relationship on sensors. Too early to think about next generation FX though? The D800 has hardly got out the door.



As for people doing their own lens testing - good luck! If it were that cheap and simple I think a lot more of us would be doing it.



Actually, on that note, there might be an indicative option in the future as I've been following Reikan FoCal software. Currently its main job is to automate the AF micro-adjust setting, but a future feature is to provide some lens performance data out of it too. Of course we have to wait and see when that happens what you get out.

Testing outside of the current labs and team is a no-go for us.



Regarding the new sensors: we will skip the D800 and continue to test FX on the D3x.



If the new 24MP sensor is the Sony sensor (or based on it), we will most likely skip that step, too.

Actually an entry level D3200 with the 24mp DX sensor does not make sense to me. A D3200 with the 16mp DX sensor and a D400 (+maybe D5200) with the new 24mp DX sensor is reasonable in theory... But who knows... What Nikon did in the FX line up regarding the sensor res. was also unexpected (or unwellcome, to me at least <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />...)



By the way, what makes you think that Nikon will produce a 54mp FX sensor in the future?

If a 24MP D3200 - or entry level DSLR, whatever the name - is indeed coming, it would be wise to provide a further JPEG setting which gives more compression than hitherto, to keep file size down. Otherwise there is a danger of newcomers being put off by large files.



For the rest of us... bring it on. I trust Nikon to put image quality at the top of the list, they've always taken a conservative approach. Fascinating to see how they tweak this sensor.

It is just my imagination. Nikon released a 16MP D7000 in 2010, then made an FX with the same sensor pixel density--the 36MP D800 in 2012. Now Nikon is going to release a 24MP D3200, so I imagine that Nikon will also produce an FX with the same sensor pixel density--a 54MP FX DSLR in a few years <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

All 3 are Sony sensors (16mp, 24mp APS-C and 36mp FF). If Sony develops a 54mp sensor, then sure <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/tongue.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />
