Interesting move by Canon. I'm sure that's a lens that the really huge crowd of Canon DSLR users would like to use, too. Especially at this price.

Certainly good news for the system but they stil have a lot of catching up to do.

I find it fascinating that they seem to be able to speed up the AF by a factor of 2.3x just via a firmware update.
Makes you almost wonder whether they rather slowed it down on purpose. :-)

Since AF in cameras with image sensor based AF is purely software algorithm based (provided they use lenses designed for contrast AF commands (small fast steps)), it is only natural that one can speed up AF via a firmware update.

Look at the E-P1 when that came out. I got one very shortly after launch and the AF, well, probably could be compared to the EOS M at perhaps a second or so for single shot. But after a firmware update or two it sped things up so they're close to lens limited.
Too often, electronic goods manufacturers want to get stuff out on time (to internal targets), than get it in the desired state. Unless it is so bad it can't be sold at all...

If it's any close to the 10-22, all rejoice ! I truly miss that lens.
Nice to see a better firmware coming too :-)
