Of course it remains to be seen what this may mean in actual performance, but near (Canon) native single shot AF would be "good enough" for a lot of uses, allowing the use of my existing Canon mount non-IS fast primes with body stabilisation. Could be quite a fearsome combo.

A 24mm lens for test is hardly the most challenging scenario, and its performance at the longer focal lengths is where it matters most. In particular, shall have to keep an eye open as to how it performs with USM vs. STM lenses.

dA Canon 7D2, 7D, 5D2, 600D, 450D, 300D IR modified, 1D, EF-S 10-18, 15-85, EF 35/2, 85/1.8, 135/2, 70-300L, 100-400L, MP-E65, Zeiss 2/50, Sigma 150 macro, 120-300/2.8, Samyang 8mm fisheye, Olympus E-P1, Panasonic 20/1.7, Sony HX9V, Fuji X100.

There is only one "fast" FF STM lens, the 24-104mm f3.5-5.6.... The 40mm is of the slow variety with gears.

Quote:Silent shutter! I will move to this one. The A7R (I) is next to unusable for testing.

BSI sensor removes most of the issues with wide-angle Leica M glass that were common with previous digital cameras

The discolouration issues have to do with microlens position/structure, not with whether the sensor is backside illuminated or not. See NEX-5 and NEX 5R.

The issue of sensor glass (and astigmatism resulting from it) won't be fixed.

Sidetracking, the Canon AF compatibility is very hit and miss. Some lenses are impossible to use with any confidence, like the Canon EF 100mm f2.8 L IS USM Macro.

A7R II users also report a big issue with manual focus magnification in the viewfinder (akin to the Nikon D800 live view magnification problem).

D800 live view problem sounds as if the live view would work okay, but problems appear in several serial numbers. I would not call it an issue or a problem (as a failure), I would call it simply bad engineering at worst. It is not specific to D800, other Nikon models also have poor LV capabilities. They fixed parts of it in the newer models. Manual focus with D810 (and maybe a loupe) is great, but the trouble is, it can be set up to show DoF and that makes it impossible to focus in low light and closed aperture. As far as I'm concerned, I could not discover a logical concept to set upt the LV the one or other way, everything appears to be hidden in a marathon menu.

Don't understand, why they don't use bright view and couple the DoF control with the button like when using the OVF. But maybe I haven't figured out how to do so. Of course, if LV has to amplifiy to the max, noise becomes a problem. Haven't used other cameras working fine under these conditions.

The D800 magnification problem in live view is specific for the D800. It got fixed by Nikon through introducing the D810.

There is no "serial number" related issue, it is the same for all D800's.

I tried my friend's A7RII today for about an hour with three lenses (FE 35/1.4ZA, FE 55/1.8ZA, FE 90/2.8G).

The viewfinder is larger than A7R. AF is much faster and without hunting, kinda feels like the AF of an SLR. Shutter is much quieter in normal mode or electronic first curtain mode, and of course silent in full electronic mode. The shutter button is much better located now.

The only downside is that the body kinda feels "cheap": the battery door, the usb door, the wheels, and even the hinge of the screen all feel very flimsy, very odd for such an expensive camera, especially since these parts were fine in the A7R.
