Forums > Back > Why there is no Nikon to Sony adapter?
#1
I must admit I do not get it. Nikon's FFD (46.5 mm) is bigger than both Canon's (44 mm) and Sony's (43.5 mm) so why a Nikon to Canon adapters are abundant while Nikon to Sony adapters do not exist?

You see, I recently purchased a Nikon 85/2.8 PC. Mounting it on my 7D will be great but if I could mount it on my A33 I'd have both AS and a flip screen. I'm sure that both features would be very useful for TS work and this could persuade me to keep the A33 (I must admit I don't like its ergonomics) but it seems such an adapter does not exist. Why?

Hello!

The possible problem is that distance between bayonet and sensor is larger at Sony A comparison to Nikon F. Similar is when use M42 lenses on Nikon F.

Nice day Janez

Canon's (44 mm) and Sony's (43.5 mm)

Sony's flange distance is 44.5mm.

You can get (beyond) infinity focus if you attach a Sony lens on an EOS/EF body straight.

If your lens is a new PC-E type lens, then you can't adapt it to any mount because the aperture control is electronic. And I'm pretty sure even the previous iteration of this lens had the same electronic aperture control. The aperture ring on the lens is an electronically coupled one, just like it is with the Contax 645 lenses. Also why did you get a Nikon 85 when Canon has an excellent TS-E 90 2.8 without any of these problems? The Canon also has the advantage of being home-adjustable for tilt vs. shift orientation whereas the Nikon needs to be sent to a Nikon service center due to the way the electronics are fitted inside.

You can get one here:

He is the most well-known maker in Italy, doing really well done stuff. He sales on e-bay too. Check the list of adapter, you can find about everything.

No. The PC 85 has a fully manual aperture. Eletronic Aperture was THE new feature of the PC-E lenses (that's where the "-E" part comes from). So far, these are the only Nikon lenses with this feature.

Changing the orientation of tilt and shift does not really look like an issue to me with these lenses. Honestly, I never really used the shift feature of the TS-E 90 or the PC-E 85. YMMV, though, and it's certainly an important point with lower focal lengths.

However, if I was a Canon user, I would certainly prefer the TS-E 90 over the PC 85. The electronic aperture of the TS-E was the thing I missed most on my PC-85 and it was the main reason to upgrade to the PC-E 85.

I do not get why you would think a tilt shift lens would be nice with images stabilization... TS lenses are about the most tripod wanting lenses I can think of. Even with macro use...

I was under the impression that the older PC 85 was also electronic aperture because I didn't see the usual internal aperture leaver. Wow... so until recently, Nikon users had to use full manual aperture on t/s lenses. Ugh! <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

For macro you'd need a tripod but why else would you need one? t/s is not all about shooting buildings and architecture you know?

You are right. I mistakenly referred to the old Minolta MF mount (MD) instead of the newer AF mount. That said, it is still shorter than Nikon's.

That's exactly why I opted for the PC version rather than the PC-E one.

Because the PC is better for macro.

My experience with TS tought me that 1) I never tilt and shift and 2) I mostly tilt. Thus, it is a non-issue for me. See here.
