Forums > Back > Canon 17-40 end of life or false alarm?
#1
A big German photo store, Foto Koch, has marked the Canon 17-40 as "restposten" which means something like sale of left overs. Any ideas or rumors regarding a replacement? I was thinking about buying but if a replacement is coming I might want to wait a little longer since I dont need the lens urgently. I noticed that at least in germany the lens price has fallen by about 50 Euros, but his could also be the result of the stronger Euro.

Hi Jens

I usually keep a good eye on rumours and I haven't read anything about it being discontinued or replaced.

Greetings,

S.

The 17-40 reached the end of its real life when the 5D2 was released... since then it has been on a life support machine... if you can call that living <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Big Grin' />

The EF 17-40mm f4 L USM is part of the cash back program in Europe, when one buys a 7D or 5D MK II. The program runs till somewhere in April...

I think it's still very good between 20-40mm on the 5DII, as Klaus' recent test indicated. 17-20 are OK if you crop the corners. But I think the colour and the balance of contrast/ microcontrast are the best of all my lenses on the 5DII and I also have the 35 f1.4L. 300 f4L IS, 400 f5.6L and the 70-200 f4L IS. I find the 5DII more contrasty than my older 40D or 5D so find the combination of the (very contrasty) 35 f1.4L and the 5DII to be too harsh and biting. Definitely not to be used for portraits.

Sorry Klaus, I have to ask to help in my buying decision. What do the rumors say? When will the replacement come? Will it be more expensive? Will it add IS (I hope not, I want a small, compact and affordable lens)?

Yes….

We are living in 2010 where UWA with sharp corners is almost standard.

Tokina 11-16 was first followed by sigma 8-16.

I should not expect any new UWA with soft corners anymore.

Ok, One more consideration:

Would a Tokina 11-16 deliver superior results on a 50d comapred to a 17-40 on a 5D mark II?

If yes this might be the way to go, since I still have the 50D as a back up and a really dont want to drag around a heavy lens like the upcoming Tokina 16-28.

Based on other recent lens updates, I think we can all safely say any new lens will cost more than the old one. Possibly quite a lot.
