Forums > Back > Canon RF 24-105mm f3.4-5.6 IS STM appears

Images of the Canon RF 24-105mm f3.4-5.6 IS STM have been posted online. So finally a kitlens zoom, better late than never?

I can't grasp what is the diameter of the filter thread. The EF 24-105/3.5-5.6 STM wasn't that much more compact than the f/4L version as it had the same 77mm filter thread. This looks like it may be smaller but - like with the 24-240 - digital corrections might come into play.

The EOS RP kit will be really cheap with this one.

Well, we'll have to see how much it costs and how it performs optically, but those specs look very good for a kit-lens (compared to, say, the Sony FE 28-70mm f/3.5-5.6 OSS). Already got the F4 version, so I'm not interested in this one, but it will be interesting to check how it performs.

This is not a 3.5-5.6 but a 5-7.1 lens ;-)

So what's so bad about that Oly 12-45mm f/4 again? LOL.

That is surprising (and it's f4-7.1, not f5-7.1 by the way) and I don't think there are any current lenses with specs close to that.

That said, I should note two things: the range is more useful than the typical 28-70mm kit lenses, and 105 mm f7.1 is a larger aperture than 70mm f5.6. It could still be desirable if they can sell it in a kit for $100, $200 at most.

 24-105mm f4-7.1 vs 24-90mm f8? Seriously, klaus?
Do you think Canon will label this lens Pro? LOL

It will do 1:2 macro according to the rumours.

The thing is - what's the point of going FF then? The prospect that you MIGHT buy something faster in some years?
It's not even a small lens.

It's not even a small lens.

The point is not that hard to see? Inexpensive standard zoom with a big range. One would COMBINE that (whoa, what a concept ;-) ) with other (prime) lenses perhaps, instead of "prospecting" on replacing it with something faster later on. Like with a fast 50mm f1.2, or a versatile 35mm f1.8 macro, or a portrait lens? Or even that 70-200mm f2.8. Or other lenses one might already have.

I shoot FF, with a 70-200mm f4, 55mm f1.2, 35mm f2, very occasionally 140mm f1.8, 85mm f1.8, 135mm f2.8, 90mm f2.8. And what is my current "standard zoom"? A 35-70mm f3.5-4.5. Yes, you could argue what the point is of FF if one would only have that standard zoom, indeed. But in reality... a bit silly to wonder what the point is since the only thing that would be silly is to get a camera designed to have exchangeable lenses, and only get one lens for it.

It is "not even small" you say. Yeah, it is bigger than a EF 40mm f2.8 STM, indeed.
In reality: it is said to be 76.6mm wide, a huge whopping 1.3cm wider than that Olympus 12-45mm f4 you seem to think is small, and 18.8mm longer than that Oly "Pro". And while it has a bit- to much larger aperture over the entire range, it only weighs 395grams according to the rumour, 141 grams (!!!) more than that Oly.

Back to reality... It is (rumoured to be) a compact and light lens. It is not much bigger than that silly small 35-70mm f3.5-4.5 lens that I have.

Ok, I see. It's a Canon so it's great per definition. ;-)
