Forums > Back > Nikkor 10 -24 D- unsharp edges repair?
#1
My new Nikkor 10-24 mm has bad extreme corners resolution (Imatest MTF 0,17 only at radius 12,7 mm instead 0,43 Nikon web specification).

The resolution at all corners is appr the same, therefore I think that it is not the problem of lens centering. I am persuated that I have bought defective copy of Nikkor 10-24 mm. The practical test shots are in attachment (1:1 crops of center + all corners + all extreme corners).

Prague Nikon service recommended me to send lens for warranty repair (repair shoud be made at Nikon Europe Service, specialised for 10- 24 lens, after Nikon internals tests)

Has somebody experience with repair of simillar problem (Nikkor 10-24 symetrical poor extreme corners resolution)?

I am afraid to send new lens for such repair because I could not realize how could it made. I am afraid that the result of "repair" could be worse than the present state.

Many thank for relevant comments.

For me, whenever a lens behaved poorly, it was asymmetrical. So, maybe what you're seeing is normal. Do things improve upon stopping down?

Sharpnes at F 5,6 is only a litle better, see attachment.

I think that extreme corner resolution 15 lp/mm (MTF50) of my lens instead circa 30 lp/mm of reference lens is dramatically diference. I will be satiesfied with 25 lp/mm at F 3,5.

My Nikon 10-24 has also bad corners at 10mm especially wide open, but I did not consider repair, they look ok at f/11. Also, it is ok at 12mm.

See my mini review of the lens at 10mm here: http://jtra.cz/stuff/review/nikkor10-24/index.html

What's your reference lens? I think the lens photozone tested also only delivered 20 lp/mm (I hope my math is correct - 950 lwph, 24 mm image height, divide by two for line pairs) in the corners at 10 mm wide open.

Do you adjust for field curvature?

While the Nikon 10-24mm is not super at 10mm, it is not particularly bad either, and I have not seen it this bad as your examples. As far as I know, this is not normal at all, the lens should still be reasonably sharp in the corners.

I do not think any "repair" can make this worse, and if they find they can not repair it they just might give you a new lens.

Yes, at Imatest measurement I eliminate curvature by the local Live View focusing.

Nikkor 10-24 is DX lens for the sensor "24 x 16". Therefore is Fhotozone test result at extreme corner much better: 920 LWPH/15,8mm/2 = 30lp/mm !!!

I consider as "reference lens" Nikon specification at Nikon web: http://imaging.nikon.com/products/imaging/lineup/lens/zoom/widezoom/af-s_dx_10-24mmf_35-45g_ed/index.htm

I know your mini review. I apreciate its high.

Your lens seems me MUCH BETTER as my.

In case you will send me raw files I could try to evaluate your test shots by Imatest. It is enought to send (place om your web) four (for beginning only one?) extreme cornes shots of test chart at F 3,5.

Sorry, but @10mm wide open, corner softness such as this does not come exactly unexpected. looks entirely within expectations . Dont expect to measure same the lp/mm as Nikon does. Only they know under what conditions these reults ca be reached.

That is not exactly true, try finding an f3.5 10mm sample online with that bad corners of this lens... you will find it hard.
