I canceled the Walimex mirror test, BTW. The measured resolution was well below the minimum mark ...

oups...
does this mean the resolution is "far" beyond a 400/500mm-lens with a 1.4/2*converter ?

Yes.
2 red rings! That should make it better than that lovely Canon EF 200mm f2.8 L USM!
Hmmm. I've seen a used Canon 500/4.5 L go for $3400. That's not a lot more money for 2/3 extra stop plus autofocus.

500/4.5 is a rare breed though. Doesn't turn up every day.

The base units seems to cost just under 2000EUR.
The individual extension modules should be around 200EUR or so.
I searched and couldn't find a store that sells it. Can you please provide a link?
Thinking about it, this pic does not look too promising, to put it mildly.

It is called softness caused by diffraction. Says nothing about the lens and everything about the camera used.
This does not look half bad (500mm, 7D):

This looks quite spectacular(350mm, K5):

This looks good too (500mm, 7D):

And thjs looks quite excellent (500mm, 60D):

Diffraction at 5.6? It's wide open.

And which camera is used? And what makes that the aperture, with that focal length and f5.6 at 500mm?

According to EXIF, shot was made with a digital compact (Canon IXUS 300 HS), so it is diffraction after all.
Edit: sorry, my post overlapped with the BC's.
