Why would you think the new lens would be cheaper than then the AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.4G?

Only because of f1.8 vs. f1.4?



I am looking at the 50mm prime for low light shots on DX of people where I can keep a little more distance than with the 35/1.8.

I was so close to get the AF-S 50/1.4, but now I am puzzled whether I should wait...



The new entry level lenses from Nikon seem to be all good, at least the 85/3.5 and the 55-300VR are.

Well, if funds allow, I would go for the AF-S 1.4 Nikkor, it's a very nice lens indeed, although for portraiture I still prefer the 85mm lens (perspective, bokeh, lower distortions) which in the 1.8 version is roughly the same price as the 50mm AF-S .. <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

Well, who would purchase a 50/1.8 if it's the same price as the 50/1.4?



On the other hand: obviously quite a few people buy the SB-700 despite the fact that it's only marginally cheaper than the much more capable SB-900 ...



If you compare prices for the AF-D versions (or Canon's EF versions), the f/1.8 lenses are usually a lot cheaper than the faster lenses.

Honestly, so far I'm not impressed by the 55-300 VR, especially at the long end. But I might have had a bad sample. Got a second one just yesterday to verify this ...

Why did you sell your Sigma 50 f/1.4?

From the graphs it seems to be one of the better 50mm out there (especially regarding wide-open performance and bokeh)...

Definitely interested myself, just sold the Sigma 50/1.4 <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />



I guess there will be some sort of official announcement later. Since they assemble quite a few of their lenses (especially in the lower price segment) in China and Taiwan, it might come to market soon.

Well, the lens is not bad, bokeh is great, but border sharpness is not. But the main reason to sell it was simply that too much gear has accumulated here. With reviews done (even if they're not published yet) quite some lenses will need to find a new home now.

The "new" AF-S 50mm f1.4 G does not shine (at all) regarding bokeh quality either. Does it have an aspherical element? I think it does not, I seem to remember its optical design being similar to the old AF D?



Lets hop you are wrong concerning bokeh smoothness.. Anyway, I am not clear on why Nikon decided to such a radical optical redesign of the old 50mm f1.8, as it is a great lens, sharpness wide, already, with (for Nikon) low CA too.



And lets hope the 50mm f1.8 AF-S implementation is not as dog slow as that from the AF-S 50mm f1.4!



And the old 50mm's are much more handsome, in my opinion!

Well, an aspherical element doesn't necessarily mean a bad bokeh - the 85L has a great one just to mention an opposing example. However, such lenses seem to have a higher tendency of producing highlight "onions".



I reckon that Nikon will surely implement some mechanical simplifications in order to keep the price level down. And I'm already fearing the result ...
