I guess the big players are ready to explore new territory. Unless of course they trying to secure just the patents to avoid royalties in the future.

I hope so... But usually the latter is the case... Nikon also had a patent for a innovative sensor design (some years ago), but we didn't see this on any DSLRs...
Edit: the (important) difference in this case is that Canon itself manifactures the sensors, does not design and order them.
