Upcoming Canon Tests

Must be popular (relative to manufacturing rate) Smile B&H has them; hum. To be honest I kind of wondered if newer photo and electronics would be more scare down there relative to asia and usa but it seemed that some items - esp micro 4/3 - you were able to obtain relatively quickly.

Quote:Bleh must be the 135 that is apo; purple fringing is distracting.
Purple fringing is a term used for something different than chromatic aberration. Because often lenses have LoCA of the green and magenta variety, people mistakenly tend to refer to LoCA as "purple fringing (due to the magenta). Even lateral CA of the green + magenta variety mistakenly gets to be called purple fringing, by some, because they see magenta edges.

Usually LoCA is not a problem in images. If you happen to have an image where it shows up, it is super easily dealt with in post processing.

Why I find the Zeiss 35mm f1.4 attractive is for something that is NOT easily dealt with in post processing. The bokeh of the Zeiss has a smooth and wooly character, which I find attractive.

The Zeiss 135mm f2 is called "APO" by Zeiss, but it still will show a bit of LoCA (yes, of the green and purple kind) when one goes to look for it.

That is cheating.

Less cheating than distortion correction and vignetting correction Wink

Hum. i had a comment on that last comment but I'm not sure it is worth the effort to type. On other news (totally unrelated to canon testing unless you like to adopt canon lenses to E-mount) current Rumour is Sony will announce the FF nex in 2 months.

More on topic some side by side comparison of zeiss 35f1.4 to sigma 35f1.4 - Not so sure the zeiss is >>> sigma with regards to bokeh but these pictures show pretty harsh situation:

That link shows well that the Sigma is no bokeh star. It however shows no images taken with the Zeiss 35mm f1.4 Distagon (ZE/ZF). The Zeiss 35mm f1.4 (ZE/ZF) has only been introduced quite recently (September 2010), and it a totally different design than that old Contax.

The old Contax Zeiss 35mm f1.4 Distagon (C/Y) is a 9 element, 8 group design:

The Zeiss 35mm f1.4 Distagon ZF/ZE, 11 elements and 9 groups:

Maybe judging the bokeh character of a 2010 lens by looking at images from a 1975 design might not be the optimal way to go about things? Wink

From what I have seen (image wise), the Zeiss renders quite nicely for a 35mm lens on SLR. Which is the reason I am interested in it, even though it is a heavy beast and it is rather expensive.

Sigh you are just too picky. I mean you merely said zeiss so I gave you some pictures of a zeiss 35f1.4. Really. Isn't that good enough ?

-

Btw lenstip really raved the sigma while less than then complementary on the ze; though you already know...

-

For me both are too heavy Smile

-

Actually I thought the canon 35f2 was a pretty good compromise for one stop less and decent flare control (was disappointed the ze didn't do better; most of my contax lenses had very good flare control).

I either want a 35mm f2 for normal 35mm stuff, it is small and compact and doesn't weight a lot. If I would go for a 35mm that offers a larger aperture for shallow DOF work, it will not be the Sigma, because I do not like its bokeh a whole lot. That is where that Zeiss would come in. I could care less that it is less sharp wide open, as shallow DOF makes that less of an issue (and bokeh is more important then).
