Time to try to figure out what some of these 'ultrabridge" cameras deliver, i.e. those that have 24-1000mm lenses on a tiny, high density sensors (> 18Mp). Usually at the long end they have f5.6 or even worse, possibly the benefits of the long lens (1000mm) may be totally lost due to the diffraction.
Ok, just tried to calculate this for the Canon Powershot SX50 HS, with a 24-1200 lens (F3.4 - F6.5), and 12 Mp (Sony has a 20MP sensor, but size not given). Looks like at f5.6 the sensor only needs to be 2 Mp (green) ... So, using f4 and only 600mm equivalent instead of 1200mm f5.6 would give you a similar resolution, because you just could crop in ?
I guess in movie mode it still makes sense.
