I have the Nikkor 180mm f2.8 ED in both AF and MF versions.
Personally, I wouldn't recommend either these days. As nice as the 180mm f2.8 is (I prefer the AF, BTW) it's not as handy as the 70/80-200 f2.8.
I shot a number of events with just the 180 but they were over two days. on the first day I used a wide angled zoom and then came back the next day and shot only with the 180.
Of course if you can afford it, just get the 70-200 (f4 or f2.8) and be done with.
Pricewise, the older 80-200 f2.8 is not that much more than the 180.
