No, I don't believe this is the case.
If you look at [url="http://www.studor13.si/music/photos/PZ/24-85-at-f8.jpg"]the 24-85mm at f8 shot [/url] you can see the word "Napkins" which is to the far right hand corner and it is in front of where I had focused. It is well and truly within the dof for an f8 shot and it is clearly sharp.
If the lens is "massively back-focused" there is no way that that word Napkins would be anything like sharp. You can also see a lemon to the far left hand side which is also in front of the plane of focus and is acceptably sharp.
Again, regardless of where the exact point of focus is a "normal" lens can't have the corners significantly sharper than the center at f8.
