The pleasure to master a technic, to use a tool properly, is essential for me in photo.

The rigth move, at the right time/place, with the right tools makes me happy.

I like photo report, and more precisely to offer friends photos the usually don't have (situation, quality...).

I am not motivated to shoot a beautifull landscape, if there is nobody I knew on it,

or linked too a strong memory, cause I know a better photo does already exists somewhere else.

In brief, the esthetic search is secondary... just want to "succeed" something nice.

Most of the time, it's sport photos. I like weddings too... And all that is new for me (cf technic).



PS: I'm found of photozone tests and like to train my english,

that's why there's so many faults, and why I'm here instead of on a french forum.

I'm one of the dinosurus who started photo with film photo...After Canon A1 & Minolta AF,

my dream team was during a long time flash +17-35 + 50-200L with 2 light EOS in montain

(and 2 EOS RT when weight was not a problem).

Even if the digital revolution made me loose part of my "aura" of photographer, I liked this change.

But with the time (as me!) the team gained weigth : 10-22L+EOS500D(+200g) + 50-200L+EOS5D(+400g) = +600g !!!

Unfortunatly, at the same time, more and more people shoot beaufull photos with small digital cameras <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' />

so I really need a lighter team now to make sens (3kg for something just a bit better...).

Think hybrids would be the solution, and wait a long time for EOS-M... yak.

Now I can't wait anymore. To change partially of brand for mountain repport is not a problem at all for me.

but wich solution ?

I'm looking for a new lighter equipement for mountain climbing around 1,5kg

from ultra wide angle to tele (200min.. but the more, the better).

I was thinking about something with a panning mode for wide angle and/or bridge for the tele.

Bad or good idea ? wich ones ? other ideas ?

I'm a Pentax user, so I will suggest Pentax of course!



K-30 + DA15mm + DA18-55WR + DA50-200WR <1.4kg including weather-sealed body and two weather sealed lenses. The zooms are decent, not Pentax's best lenses, but a good compromise between optics/size/practicality. There are other lighter options from Pentax if you can accept prime lenses.



Otherwise, the NEX and then the μ4/3 are the next steps down in size, and both good systems. I'm sure the others here will be able to add more details of the pros and cons of each system.

These two important corrections will help your communication in English language forums:

About your suggestion of one K-30, the problem is I need at least 2 DSLR, not to have to change of lenses :

so there is no big difference with Canon (except there's paning mode to increase wide angle).

Moreover, if the 15mm seems pretty, the 50-200 is really week... (55-250 on a EOS500D seems better).

Me and my wife, often mix cameras, and take photos with the different ones, side by side


I'd also suggest the K-30 (which is a light water-resistant APS-C DSLR), plus the 18.55 WR, and the 55-300 kit lenses.


My wife has the 55-300 since a few years back and it performs flawlessly on her K-30 (not that good on the K-5, I hasten to add). The already mentioned DA15 is a nice lens as well.


I myself has switched from Pentax K-5 to Nikon V1, which can give stunning results with the 6.7-13, and 18.5 - among the sharpest lenses there are, and very small and light as well. The 30-110 is superb, plus maybe the 10-30.


My wife swears by her the water-resistant OM-D E-M5, with the 14-150 on, a small capable combination!


A lot swears by the new, nonpowered version, of the Nikon 1 10-100 (equals a 27-272mm lens, on a 35mm camera), but I have no personal experience. A small and light lens.


A not as rugged, but exemplary optically, combo would be the NEX-6 and the 18-200,

which, surprisingly, comes in a few variants (some really made for pro-video, some simplified for amateur use). My wife has the NEX-5N and an early version of the 18-200 (still retailing at over $1000!), superb combo! The NEX-5N have roughly the same performance as the newer NEX-6, but its electronic viewfinder is an add-on!


Superb results!


If you shoot video:


The V1 is excellent for video, focus is lightning-fast, and I have found it surprisingly rugged! The OM-D is also excellent for video, with the best anti-shake system you can get, and almost as fast focus as the V1/V2! NEX-6 is clearly one of the best mirrorless cameras for video.


Your choice!

Oh, one K-30 + 55-300 is a fantastic combination! To that I'd recommend a RX100, the new model seems truely great!

How about a Canon SL1 (100D), EF-S 18-55 STM, EF-S 55-250 IS, and EF-S 10-22   = 1387 grams. (leaves something for a CPL etc.)

I used to have a Pentax K5 but now I switched to FF (D800) and MFT (G3).

In terms of size/IQ for traveling/hiking, MFT is very hard to beat. In fact I use my D800 less and less due to the bulk and the not so great image quality loss for my use.

Plus, I really love CDAF as it's so reliable and accurate (always spot on) compared to PDAF.


I recommend an Olympus OM-D with the following 3 lenses:

• Olympus 9-18 : ultra wide to standard
  
• Panasonic 14-45 : walkaround
  
• Oly 40-150 : tele
  

This combo covers you from 18 to 300mm (full frame equiv) in a much smaller/lighter package (< 1 kg) than any DSLR can offer while getting the same IQ. You may even skip the 14-45 if the gap between 18 and 40mm is not that important to you.



Note that at the moment you can buy a G3 for less than $250 new! Unbeatable value for the price.

Just to let you know there is currently a great deal at Adorama.com for a Panasonic G5+14-42 kit for $349.

Depends on your budget/need. For mountain climb I would think om-d (high end); G3/G5 (low end) or Xe-1 - middle

 

(high/low/middle refers to cost). The omd is very responsive (fast focus/smooth viewfinder and has ibis and excellent dust removal). The xe-1 has a laggy view finder and slow focus but very good low light performance and the 18-55 is a very good zoom (but there has been a lot of reports of QC issues)

I left out the nex and there are the various aspc slr (canon, pentax, nikon). I've heard bad things about the 14-42 kit lens (post above) but the 14-45 ($150 used) is suppose to be quite decent. For olympus the 12-50 is not that hot (but sealed if your mountain climb is wet). Can't really say which camera will feel good to you and I highly recommend finding a shop - also be aware that non-optical view finders should be tested in bright sun ilght (as well as indoors) if the store will let you (this also go for auto focus speed)
