Sigma 35mm f1.4: Sharp. Smooth foreground bokeh. Bad background bokeh.
#1
A shame for an f1.4 lens, such background bokeh... Not an optimal design then. Its not so small little brother (30mm f1.4 EX DC) has much nicer background bokeh, but is not as sharp.

Great lens for those who like to stop down a lot, but then why lug around an f1.4 lens? A bit of a let down.

With so many lens design variables, what are you going to prioritise? A 35mm is never going to be a bokeh machine anyway, so I don't think it is a major deal myself. As I prefer a 35 over a 50 if I want to limit myself to one focal length walkabout, this is a very interesting contender given the alternatives have other limitations too.

....yes possibly, but it seems to me that especially at 1.4 it's best to have low contrast backgrounds for nice smooth results unless the out of focus bits are very out of focus indeed - that first red tree shot against the sky would be very difficult at 35 maybe

......but i like their mirror lake :-)

I'm no expert on boken but in this case it doesn't look like a deal breaker to me (YMMV). Any lens would probably struggle in the conditions like the first (proper) shot.

This lens seems sharp and an absolute bargain for the performance. Almost a pity I have no real need for a 35mm lens; I'll be waiting for a 24/1.4 cast from the same mould.

I don't think that the background bokeh is bad (based on the first link). The out-of-focus highlights are quite smooth with only a bit of outlining. The blur is pretty decent for a 35mm lens as well.

You may argue that a 85mm f/1.2 is better but then this is about apples vs oranges.

Sigh. I am not comparing it to any 85mm lens. I am just lloking at how it does bokeh wise (not blur wise).

It does exactly wrong what the Nikon 35mm f1.4 does wrong. Very smooth foreground bokeh and then "double" background bokeh.

You get "double" OOF subject edges, making the bokeh character rather bad.

There are lenses in this focal length class that do better:

Sigma 30mm f1.4 EX DC

Nikon 40mm f2.8 Micro

Sony 35mm f1.8 DT

Canon 35mm f2

Not sure about the Samyang 35mm f1.4. It probably doesn't have too nice a bokeh character.. sometimes it does rather nice:

and then it does things quite horrendous:

I know that 35mm lenses are very hit and miss bokeh wise, but for me the Sigma 35mm f1.4 definitely is a miss.

It's difficult to compare bokeh of different lenses when looking at completely different shots.

The only way to truly assess its bokeh compared to the others would be by shooting the exact same scene with all lenses.

Sure it is not super easy, but after seeing more than one shot from a lens one does get a feel of how it does. No Sigma 35mm f1.4 image I have seen has nice bokeh, so it is safe to say its on the less attractive end easily...

It is not all that hard to get a feel of bokeh with different shots either.

I don't normally wade into opinion threads like this, but I disagree completely. The shots from the Sigma look pretty ideal to me, and if I wanted this focal length this is the lens I would buy.

Always same from you. There is no Sigma or Nikkor lens good as Canon. It's disgusting to see that moderators tolerate your Canon fanboyism through many forums.
