I believe Nikon & Canon are simply betting on their favorite horses: the FF DSLR bodies. Mirrorless market with cropped sensor equipped bodies has been too much competitive in recent years. Sony and Fuji placed serious APS-C mirrorless bodies in the market which consequently caused some users question the specs and user friendlyness of APS-C DSLRs. I personally think that Nikon and Canon both see no big issues in delaying the new serious APS-C products. But that does not necessarily mean that we won't see any improvements in that area. It all depends on the market... On the Nikon side for example, just by evaluating the sales statistics for D800 and D600, Nikon can consider to launch a new D400 or not...
