Lr Vs C1
#1
Hi All,

I'm currently trying both LR4 and C1. I do prefer C1 over LR because Lr is kinda lagging on my computer and I also prefer the output of C1.

But my problem come from the fact that C1 express come without the noise reduction , without the histogram adjusment ( but LR don't seem to have it with separate RGB ) and without lense adjustement

So my question is: do you think I would be better with C1 and a third party noise reduction program, or it's better with everything in the same program?

For reference:

Lr4: 150$

C1 express :100$

C1 pro: 300$

Thank

Xastoul

Sorry, I just saw that c1 espress is coming without the local adjustment ........ that's not good at all

Hi Xastoul,

You might want to wait for Capture One 7 and try it out. The dpreview RSS feed had a release anncouncement today, but I guess they were early; it is not on their website. The announcement said C1 7 finally has integrated digital asset management, in case that matters to you.

Anyway, on my computer, C1 6 is lagging and crashing from time to time, while Lightroom's performance and stability is just fine. On the other hand, I found C1 to give the most pleasing results in terms of color rendition. To come close to these results, I had to invest quite some time when using Lightroom.

Lightroom is best as an overall package with the library and the ease of printing, but the color output of C1 alone may be worth it. I keep switching between the two.

Thank Thomas,

Lie you, I do like the color output of Cs1, but I'm still not sure if I want to pay twice the price for that. I guess I'll need to decide if I want to wait to buy a new lense or buy the best software...

by the way, do you have/know any plugin for LR that help with the color adjustment?

Well, if you really like the output of C1 that much better, then there is no point in saving money here. For me, getting consistently better output for all of your photos would be worth the equivalent of a cheap lens.

No, sorry. But I guess the Lightroom user base must be quite large. Just try to google it.

All I know is that there are plenty of "Presets" available on the web that allow you to apply certain looks to your photos.

The Topaz Lab tools will work with Lightroom, as do at least some of the tools of Nik Software.

I'm currently evaluating DXO Optics Pro 7 and the results are fantastic, the noise reduction is so effective that it's like gaining a stop without any impact on detail. Version 8 is supposed to come out in a few days and will be discounted for a couple of weeks at $100. I'm getting it for sure.

I didn't tried it before so I did it this morning. While it seem to be superior in some point ( sharpening (a bit better), noise reduction (a bit better ), lens distortion/ perception adjustment ( much better, but less useful for me)).

It's seem, to me, that their software are like their site: it's really focused on the technical stuff, like lens distortion, sharpening and noise reduction They do it really well but there is more than that. Color seem to be a lower priority, you can easily just by trying the histogram adjustment.

The absence of the local adjustment is also a deal breaker for me.

But thank to let me know that this software exist, they may add enough good feature in the future to make it a real complete program. they may have it in the Ver. 8 but I not sure I wanna be a beta tester on those....

Thank for your help. I kind of knew that all along, but I don't like to pay for all those thing, but great and cheap stuff are rare.

It's easier to pay for a lens, since you have it in your hand and play with it in the field. A good software is not that fun, it only make the post processing less painful .. at least for me.

I did search for LR plugin (Thank Wim for the link), and again the good one ain't cheap, so it end up the same price as C1, and I'm not even sure if there one that really do the job as I want it.

So I guessed that I did what noob do, you know what to do but you want to have some confirmation from somebody else. I try to not do that most of the time, obviousl I missed that one <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

hmmm, well C1 has introduced a new version called #7 which apparently uses a new processor..... it might be worth looking at via a trial before you decide to empty the wallet.....

so far i prefer version 6, but i'm still looking to see why 7 appears so different....so i could be wrong..... i've been wrong before and have a system with lots of dedicated (and otherwise? lovely) lenses to prove it.... <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/unsure.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='' /> .... (this site needs an embarrassed emoticon just for me).... (on second thoughts a dummy emoticon would be more suitable)

I've tried it,

I'm not quite sure why they change the layout, maybe because they had to change something that we could see, but I've notice that the program is now a bit slower when editing the image, but it is faster to get those import and process. I've also seen the new motor, at least in the task manger : C1 was already taking around 2 gig of memory, the new motor add around 400kb to that. So that's probably why it's a bit slower, but I didn't tried it after a reboot and only C1 running so my system was probably a bit overloaded. They made some nice change and some less nice. But in overall, I think it's a good upgrade. The noise reduction seem to work a bit better.

I've also tried DxO 8.

They now have a histogram and you can select R,G,B. The only problem is that it's just a display, you cannot adjust anything (apart from the saturation level in another adjustment tab). So again, they show that they don't really care about how a lens can render the color or anything else than sharpness.[Image: blink.gif] It been installed on my computer for about 20 minute.

Since some people says that CNx2 was faster that it was before I decided to give it a try.

Unfortunately, I've already installed a trial version about 2 year ago, and the software keep telling me that I can't use the trial version because it's expired. I sent a email to nikon but so far i had no respond. [Image: dry.gif]
