There are no "inactive regions" on sensors. And this "inactive region" would only be at the top. Makes no sense, nor does cutting away that part of the plastic to show part of "inactive regions of sensors". Lightening the image does in my view show very clear borders anyway...
I am just telling what I see, not what I think it should be. And you are of course right in that the 18-55mm lens indicates a bigger sensor than the G1-X (as does the 22mm, in my view). So what I see in that one photo is a 4:3 aspect ratio. And the lenses indicate a bigger than G1-X sensor.
What is more, I aligned the image with the 22mm mounted and the sensor one, by scaling the images till the Canon label matches totally. The filter size of the lens is 43mm, it states. Measuring the filter thread conservatively gave 197 pixels. With the width of the sensor area being 97 pixels, that translates in a sensor width of about 21mm. So definitely bigger than the one of the G1-X.
