If we assume the NEX issue is due in part to sensor pixel density, then allowing for the different crop factors the Canon 18MP would be equivalent to a Sony 20.5MP (using rounded values, might shift a bit if you want to work out in more precision). The Sony 16MP is generally ok, and 24MP can have issues in some cases. So the Canon would be kinda between those. Of course this does not take into consideration they may have very different design within the sensor which may or may not make any difference...
