Well, for me, quite a disappointment. Of course it is a good move for Canon in all probability - EOS APS-C compact cam with hard-to-get-any-better 18mpx sensor, the touch screen glitz and very cool design... = yyyyeah, guaranteed marketing success esp. with all those millions american moms and creatively brainless point-and-shoot shooters (this isn´t meant to sound arrogant, please).
Of course, as a thougtful photographer, I hoped a bit otherwise.... I hoped that Canon would bring at least 1 - together with an entry-level model like this - even more polished and fine-tuned semi-pro mode beating NEX-7 from Sony. Hoped for more fast primes, like Fuji has for its half-done X-Pro, targeting the semi-pros or even pros who also sometimes wish to walk out light, i.e. without the D4 + 14-24, 24-70, 70-200, while keeping the top image quality and bringing the "real" shallow DOF photography light, too.
Also, I wondered if Canon - being the last big manufacturer without a mirorless system - would create a full-frame mirorless body, the body which many seems to call for. Seems to have been a too naive dream... I cant believe noone else wants to take Leica´s approach to make a compact body with as big sensor as possible, with lenses as fast and as compact as possible..? Are there really so few of use who long for shallow DOF photography available only with full frame sensor (or larger, of course) + fast primes? You cannot obtain anything like full-frame + 35mm f/1.4 lens or 85mm/1.4 for instance from any mirorless solution on the market, can you... For people´s photography, I still consider the shallow DOF the most significant creative aspect no APS-C or 4/3 sensor can give you (while keeping the framing relatively wide).
Yes, we have already talked about it here some time ago and Klaus probably got it right: Too niche market in the already niche market... True but still can´t believe there are so few of us - forming this niche - that crave for the compact, modern and not too overpriced full-frame mirorless solution with good, fast primes.
BTW, Leica´s guys must have taken load off their minds by now: "Ufffff, it was close but fortunately we have no competition yet". True, they don´t. But unfortunately - despite all the Leica quality hype - I´m convinced their stuff is downright ridiculously overpriced and heading mostly for the snob market today. But that´s a different story, sorry about that.
