The 40mm f2.8 is still a lot more compact than the 35mm f2 and the 50mm f1.8.
That's hardly a surprise as it is a lot slower.

The 50mm f1.8 anyway is awful with its AF.
In my 20 years of shooting I had two copies of it and have used several others. With all due respect, that is nonsense. I was actually quite amazed to witness how good it performs, especially when one remembers its super-cheap price and primitive design. In his test Klaus also noted : "The AF speed is pretty fast".

The 35mm is noisy, and has 5 sided non-rounded aperture blades, the 40mm is better in that respect.
Very likely.

It is also much cheaper.
Again, that's hardly a surprise as it is a lot slower.
