The lens quality of this sample seems to be terrible ...

Indeed, something is wrong there. Most of the OOF focus edges are REALLY bad. Does not seem the same lens as earlier sample images I have seen..

Have a look at the Zeiss published MTF: applications.zeiss.com/C12578B8004E8E1D/0/C8631910991DACC7C12579C300289E1B/$file/distagon_28_15.pdf

In the corners that doesn't seem capable of resolving much more than 40 lpmm for tangential structures. If I got the factors of two in the right place, 40 lpmm on a FF corresponds to a resolution of 1900 lines per image height. That is a blur of 2 pixel on that Canon. I am not sure we are seeing any worse than this. On the other hand, if you look in the centre, this animal is biting sharp there. Which is also what the MTF is showing.

In summary I am not sure this sample is out of line with the MTF curve.

I think the sample images they took are not so well chosen to assess lens quality.

…..a bad copy of a zeiss!!!…..go wash your mouth out, immediately, if not sooner….

- oh i forgot i'm not here now - but well as i can't resist, the centre's sharp…'ish, the corners aren't distorted (well not like a certain 16 i know), the selected samples don't tell yours truly anything else, except that the subject matter was unfortunate at that show, and that they might like to try a different processor for their pictures…..imho…...
