Another one bites the dust

I thought they made progress since the D70 - doesn't look like it. Was the key reason for me to go Olympus back then. Would have been such a cool picture. Any chance in cloning that away?

The D3x has no dust-shaker ...

Why does anyone buy one in that case? This is a total disaster. Suppose a working wedding pro comes home with that and has to.clone it all away...

I am sure he/she wishes to have used something else, even if some other aspect is inferior.

Can Markus' image be helped by the Nikon dust map software?

Yep, but this was shot with the D7000. To be fair, however: things have certainly improved since the D70. The image was shot in shutter priority mode at 1/30s. The aperture chosen by the camera is f/22, which simply reveals such dust spots, that remain mostly unnoticed otherwise (I usually shoot in the range up to f/9 only and have no issues here).

The camera has more than 43.000 actuations now and the sensor has never been cleaned so far. Try that with a D70... or D3x... or M9 <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Wink' />

Cloning out shouldn't be a problem.

Well, it's not a total disaster, IMO. Using the D3x requires a little more discipline regarding regular cleaning (just as with any other DSLR in the years before). It is, however, certainly annoying, yes.

Anyone with F mount lenses who actually needs the high resolution of 24 MP has no other choice than the D3x (at least for a few more days, it seems). A wedding pro would most likely prefer to use a D3s, though, because of the much better high ISO performance.

….needs an oil change….

….i was rather thinking of a slightly more modern (well, turn of the 21st century) ultrasonic cleaning might be the go, but possibly this might not help with oil stains ;-)

- oh no it's time to clean out the ash tray - nah trouble, time to trade it on the next best thing from Nik :-)

Don't worry, very welcome <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

To put the issue a bit more into perspective: same day, same lens, same camera, different apertures (f/7.1 and f/8), dust is almost invisible here:

And while we're at it, a few more from the actual event:

Sorry for the backlight, I can't offer any with better light... actually, I found it way too cold to grab the camera and shoot, even though Alexander probably would have called it a mild spring day <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Wink' />
