To me, the internals of Canon and Nikon UWA look very different. Both have 14 lenses, the Canon appears to have less groups, but order and shape are very different. I wonder, if there are a lot possible designs for a (slow) 10-20, but Nikon's 10-24/3.5-4.5 isn't much faster. And Sigma's 10-20/3.5 pretty dated, although good.

I think all Nikon needs is a better marketing department.
they have excellent cameras and lenses.
The D5 is a sports beast with a fantastic sensor , if I were to start from scratch D500 would be my obvious choice
Their entry level cameras are also excellent at convenient prices. the problems isn't in their products it's somewhere else.
