Forums > Back > Can we expect more brands like Samyang?
#1
Hi Fellow Photozoners,

Samyang caused quite a stir with some of their lenses. (By the way, I would love to see a 24mm tilt/shift lens from Samyang.) But I wonder can we expect more brands like Samyang or are there already brands in the same league? I came across Arax for example, but don't know much about it yet.

Best wishes,

Reinier

I've long wondered if the (astronomical) telescope manufacturers might dabble in photographic lenses. I know it is easy enough to adapt existing scopes for use with cameras, but I think they have the ability to do some more interesting modern takes on the compact mirror lens with today's technology.

well i can think of other expensive lens makers, but not quality and affordable like Samyang - and i've never seen a test on Arax -

but, this reply is really to add another voice in a request for Samyang to make a T/S lens .... for the A mount <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/rolleyes.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Rolleyes' />

If you want an affordable T/S for A-mount (or any other), and can live with 35mm/2.8, run and get the one from Arax.

Their (and some others') custom lenses are based on Nikon-mount originals made by Arsenal in Kiev, Ukraine. The historical Arsenal company went out of bussiness recently, but Arax managed to buy parts that will suffice for some time. But it won't be long before they run out. Unfortunately...

hi olegk - thanks for this -

yes that lens appears to cost about $700 to be sent down here - i'd have to look at some results from it, or a test - the only pictures i've seen from it are of selective focus (you can do that in post), ie. the opposite of what i'd use it for - i'd want increased depth with good rez (ahem, you can do it in post? - not really) -

Try to search the archive of articles at www.photoclubalpha.com; it was at least a year ago.

David tried it on ... Alpha 900; don't expect miraclous performance on hi-res FF though.

There will be a 35mm 1.9 DX announcing in the near future by a Chinese manufacture. it has the look of those range finder type lens.

See the pic of its alpha model here: http://img3.fengniao.com/forum/attachpics/525/36/20967187.jpg

and here: http://img3.fengniao.com/forum/attachpics/525/36/20967165.jpg

The selling points are: 3 ED lens, 12blade aperture, and a price at about US$100.00

Also some sample shots (down sampled)here: http://img3.fengniao.com/forum/attachpics/524/104/20940730.jpg

and here: http://img3.fengniao.com/forum/attachpics/524/104/20940751.jpg

The background blur seems pretty creamy.

Sorry i dont know what brand will they sell it under. Posibly Mitakon.
