Nikkor 80-200 f/2.8
#1
I know it's a rather old model compared to the newest 70-200, but how good is the IQ with this lens?

Is it almost at the same level as the new 70-200 designs?

From the review here, it's not far from the 70-200.

For 450 euros, is it a good deal?

Thanks!

There are several 80-200/2.8 lenses, which one are you referring to?

AF-D 80-200/2.8 push/pull zoom

AF-D 80-200/2.8 twist zoom

AF-S 80-200/2.8 (unlikely, since you mentioned a price of 450 EUR)

That's the earlier non-D version of the push/pull lens.

I have no real experience with this one, just handled one shortly and liked the push/pull design (the zoom ring also acts as focus ring). IIRC, AF action was quite slow (it's a screw driven lens).

I don't know what these lenses usually go for, but 450 EUR doesn't sound extremely low to me.

Thanks for the precisions, Markus.

I don't think I'm interested in it then, as it's not the D version and it doesn't seem to be such a great deal.

Cheers!

May I ask a question to Markus: Will the in-production Af-D 80-200 f2.8 ED be tested for FX?

My impression is that except the VR the new 70-200 is not much better than the 80-200 both IQ and mechanical quality wise.

Thanks,

Frank

I'd love to, but the only copy I have had here so far was unfortunately decentered. If you know someone who owns the lens and is willing to loan it to me for a while, please do your best to arrange whatever is possible <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/wink.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Wink' />
