Let's face it: the small sensor hardly allows for much more DOF control. So, f/1.2 is probably all we'll ever see. The lens is designed for occasional use, not for the die hard or professional portrait shooter. Those are already well equipped.
Of course a T60/2 on DX might do the job better. Of course the primary choice would be a 85/1.4 on FX. But when all you want to carry is a small bag with a Nikon 1, a 85/3.5 equivalent is better than nothing, isn't it?
Regarding the size: doesn't look too big to me:
