Oooops!

I knocked camera (D7000) with 16-85mm lens off garden table... onto flagstones <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/sad.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Sad' /> yesterday...

Can't find anything wrong with either the camera or lens... seems the lens hood may have taken the brunt of the impact: I can't even see any marks on the camera body.

I've taken a few test shots today, at various apertures & focal lengths. All seems to be as it should be. Lens mount seems undamaged too, no issues changing lenses.

Are there any specific tests I should do? Should I take it to a dealers to get it checked?

If it looks ok and works ok, don't worry. You might want to use various features to make sure nothing else is broken. Actually if it landed lens hood first, they can deform quite a bit so would have significantly softened the blow than if it landed body first.

Thanks, Popo

Forgot to say the lens hood broke... and was wrapped around the lens (not mounted on front) at time, so yes, may have absorbed most of the impact

I think the camera landed base down

Hood much have taken quite a bit of force to break.

Thinking more, you could check the mechanical functions e.g. flash, shutter, mirror and switches and buttons are ok. If they are, there's not a lot left I would think...

I have dropped my SLR camera before too, but it wasn't from that high and was onto grass so not the hardest surface. Only problem I had was getting rid of the grass stain and smell! Also dropped the E-P1 once too. That bounced on carpet without harm. That's a bigger worry as the built in stabilisation seems to be a weak point on Sony cameras for example, but I got away with it on this occasion.

I have let my EF 70-200mm f4 L USM tumble from a few flights of stairs, hitting the concrete floor below. Hood also took the brunt of the impact, and broke. Lens was fine.

Congratulations with the great save of your camera and lens!

Don't forget to order a new hood for your lens, as you noticed lens hoods are great for impact absorption!

As Brightcolours said, lens hoods are great tumble protectors. It's also great to have a plastic LCD magnifier affixed to the back of an LCD-equipped camera. Then you've got fall protection for impacts in a couple of different directions. To that end a tripod quick-release mount, screwed permanently on the bottom of the camera, is a bit of a buffer as well. Buffer for falls in direction #3.

All seems well, thanks for the reassurance folks.

That was a hell of a drop with the 70-200 BC... <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/ohmy.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt=':o' /> Here's to lens hoods..! <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />
