Nikon mirrorless compact system

Frankly, photography equipment (just like e.g. cars) is a religious market. We are also seeing this here in the forum where people insist that system A is better than system B - which is usually rubbish on a global basis, of course. In religious markets user may add/change products but stick to one brand. Exceptions apply of course.

Not sure. Nikon digital compacts tend to suck (some recent exceptions) and even serious Nikon SLR shooters admit this and by other brands for a small compact. Given past performance, I am expecting that they screw that one up (as they did with their serious compact P7000).

PCs are on a sharp decline. Frankly I would be surprised if they are still mainstream beyond 2015. Their time is over ... just like DSLRs. ;-))

Given that Sony is having a 24Mpix APS-C camera soon, I guess the standard size will be 36Mpix in 2015. I doubt tabletPCs would handle that acceptably fast...

If the Nikon mirorless system really gets a sensor smaller than m4/3, I´m sure it will be more or less the same failure as the totally ridiculous Pentax Q system. Basically, it will never reach the image quality of say Sony NEX cams and those shooters, who appreciate and long for higher image quality than compact cams can offer will avoid anything smaller than m4/3. And those shooters who don´t care so much for the IQ will not have much reasons to buy this much more expensive Nikon mirorless solution and will rather take say Canon S95, Panasonic LX5 etc.

Nikon brand has build its reputation on something different than below-average products in its class... Like I´ve said, I predict Nikon mirorless with 2,7 crop is absolutely wrong step and will be failure. Esp. when Canon comes with its own mirorless system which I guess won´t feature such a crippled sensor...

You may disagree, you may argue but that´s all you can do about it. You will see I´m right here <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/smile.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='Smile' />

Well, I was referring to Desktop PCs. Notebooks are easily capable of substituting all these tasks. The tricky thing is the screen quality although at least Apple and Sony have managed to deliver good solutions here.

Not sure either... DSLR users (except for the dummiest religious ones in that manner), would focus on the sensor performance and at the same time (maybe more seriously) to the design (compact IL camera). It's not a surprise that the new Nikon would not be very impressive in terms sensor performance but indeed it should give something which m4/3 could not give. From this aspect (DSLR users to buy new Nikon), I don't agree with Mr. Hogan; it's not a market gap found out.

But when it comes to consumers who don't own a DSLR but want to try IL approach on a compact body, the new 2.7 crop Nikon would certainly fill a market gap -if only it would be cheaper than the m4/3 of course-. If not, it would be a failure just like the Pentax Q.

Well I'm not a tablet PC fan, but not only the pixel counts are rising... I believe among others (like computer games and office applications), the rising pixel counts will be the driving force behind the high performance computers in the near future.

I dream of a desktop (literally) with an LCD screen and no peripherical devices (other than my hands) to play with my raw file <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cool.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='B)' />...

The computing requirements for still imaging are nothing compared to movies ...

What about an iMac then ?

No, iMac is a desktop computer... I want the desktop itself to be my computer <img src='http://forum.photozone.de/public/style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/cool.gif' class='bbc_emoticon' alt='B)' />...

Think of a 40" LCD touch screen as your desk, which you can tilt to adjust the angle. No mouse / keyboard are attached...

I think Bill Gates has something like that. ;-)

The Ipad III is just around the corner, but I don't think it will be large like that. What you are talking about is an IMac of that size, which is nothing very revolutionary. We can make the size screens you are talking about, it is just a matter of putting the Apple software on the screen. If we don't have it, it is probably mostly because there is no market for that at the moment. However, a 27 inch screen with the retouch software of your choice is not far from that either and that you can have, only you need a mouse and a board. In terms of viewing angle, I don't think it would be practical to have it horisontally lying on a table, so - there you are - 26 inch EIZO with Photoshop or Capture NX2 - available in 24 hours from your nearest i-commerce company.
